John Lorenzen has been teaching astronomy, constellations/legends for twenty years at a variety of educational centers: George Williams College (WI) for young students where he also wrote/designed an inflatable planetarium guide; Astro Camp (CA) where he taught a variety of experiential astronomy activities for campers/adults; on a Great Lakes island telling Ojibwe constellation legends to learners; he designed and led three astronomy weekend workshops at Ghost Ranch Conference Center here in Abiquiu.

John has a BA (Ecology) and a MA (Education) and has taught at environmental education centers and public schools. He believes knowing about the stars and constellations helps inspire us in our everyday lives. We are part of the cosmos as much as the stars themselves. John currently leads history/ghost tours in downtown Santa Fe and teaches ethno botany at the Institute of American Indian Arts.

Hike through the Land of Enchantment
6 Days / 5 Nights

2016 Dates:

Jun 05 - Jun 10
Sep 25 - Sep 30

Our journey begins in the colorful desert and alpine wilderness set outside of lively Santa Fe. Our trails then transport us to a magical Anasazi settlement and on to Ghost Ranch where we soak up the pastel-hued landscapes that inspired Georgia O'Keefe. Making our way to Taos, we explore magnificent canyons, traditional pueblos, and lush alpine meadows. Did we mention charming inns and southwestern cuisine?

DAYS 1-2: TENT ROCKS-SANTA FE-ATALAYA MOUNTAIN

In Santa Fe, the exquisite Inn on the Alameda is our home base for exploring outlying trails. Our first hike features unusual volcanic deposits at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument followed by an afternoon stroll through some of the city's finest art galleries. We then hike through pinon and juniper forest to the summit of Atalaya Mountain with its sweeping views of Santa Fe, the Jemez Mountains, Sandia Peak and the Rio Grande River Valley.

DAYS 3-4: BANDELIER-GHOST RANCH

At Bandelier National Monument we travel through a designated wilderness area before dropping into Frijoles Canyon at the center of an ancient Anasazi civilization. The following day we experience the inspiration behind Georgia O'Keefe's most notable paintings as we hike the canyons and mesas of Ghost Ranch.

DAYS 5-6: SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS-TAOS-RIO GRANDE

High in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, we explore a far different world of alpine beauty. Take the afternoon to explore Taos, its galleries, and its 600-year-old pueblo. Before concluding in Santa Fe, we hike into the Rio Grande's pristine inner gorge.

Landscape oil painting in the heart of Georgia O’Keefe country

5 day workshop with Kim English

“Quick Sketches with Oils” 17-21 October 2016

Instruction will focus on the model both indoors and in the landscape for the first 3 days. The next 2 days will concentrate on the landscape along the Chama River and among the striated rock formations. Students will learn how to work fast and loose, examining the big relationships, instead of the details. The various effects of light will be discussed as well as how Kim utilizes his palette.

Colorado-based painter, Kim English, depicts the simple beauty found in daily life. Each painting speaks to the focus of his inspiration, the harmony existing between light and shadow. He has exhibited at the Allied Artists of America, the National Academy of Design, National Academy of Western Arts, the Oil Painters of America and the Salmagundi Club, among others.

4 day workshop with Lorenzo Chavez

27-30 October 2016

The major elements of plein air painting will be discussed and applied such as dark/light design, focal point, simplification and composition. Attention will be given to the use of materials (oil and pastel), the differences between a sketch and a study, value planes, color, edges and different types of light.

There will be daily demonstrations along with personal critiques and reviews of topics from the previous day.

Born in New Mexico, the striking landscapes, varied cultures and colorful history helped Lorenzo Chavez develop an appreciation for art at an early age. “I strive to represent landscapes that have a timeless appeal. I want the emotion I feel to come through in the surface textures of the art.” He has participated in many national and international group exhibitions including the Pastel Society of Artists, Plein Air Painters of America, Pastel Society of Spain and the Pastel Society of France, among others.
